Annual Central Heating Service—What to Expect

An annual boiler service is an important part of central heating system maintenance. It is also a condition of many boiler warranties. Here is a guide to what you can expect from a service.

Step 1 – Visual inspection

Your plumber will start your central heating system service with a visual check to ensure that your boiler and its associated pipework has been installed correctly.

Step 2 – Interior examination

Your plumber may remove the boiler casing to take a look at your boiler’s inner components. He will then check and possibly clean the inside of your boiler.

Step 3 – Gas analysis

Your plumber will use a flue gas analyser to check that your boiler is burning the right mixture of gas and air. If your boiler is emitting dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, he will need take the necessary action to protect your health and that of your family.

Step 4 – Report of Findings

Your plumber will talk you through his findings and provide you with a written report detailing any work that needs to be carried out. It is not always a legal requirement for your plumber to give you this type of information, but many reputable plumbers will provide it or something similar. If you rent a property, you will need to keep a copy of the report as it shows that you are diligent in maintaining your property.

If your central heating system needs servicing, you should only hire a reputable plumber. If someone other than a certified plumber performs a service in your home, you could be risking your safety and that of your property.
