Some Do-it-Yourself Drain Cleaning Tips

Your household drainage system is important in ensuring an uninterrupted water supply. Water flows down the drain, where it is directed to water treatment and sanitation systems, then back to you. For this reason, it is important to ensure there’s no break in the cycle, so here are tips for DIY drain cleaning:

Using a plunger
A plunger is your best friend when it comes to clogged drains and toilets. However, there is a correct way to use this tool. Don’t leave too much air in the plunger cup as this will cause the plunger to act like a shock absorber and you won’t be able to give the clogged sink as much force as you need to. Instead, fill the plunger cup with a bit of water before plunging it.

Using a homemade solution
If you don’t have any drain cleaning fluid around, you can make your own using typical household ingredients. A good one to try out is baking soda. To use this properly, pour one cup into the drain, and then pour boiling water on top. Another version of this is to pour hot vinegar onto the baking soda instead of hot water.

Ultimately: using professional service

DIY methods of cleaning drains are a hit-and-miss. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. If you want completely trouble-free drain cleaning, the smartest move will be to call a professional plumber.
