A Guide to Water Heating Equipment

According to Natural Resources Canada, Canadians use an average of 75 litres daily for household tasks, like washing dishes and doing laundry, and showering and bathing. Simply put, water heaters are invaluable household devices. If your existing water heater is on its last legs and you’re considering getting a new one, take a look at your options below:

Storage tank water heaters
As its name suggests, this type of water heating device consists of a tank that can usually hold as much as 380 litres, which is enough for one-day consumption in an average-size Canadian household (2 to 3 family members). The tanks are typically made of steel or stainless steel. Since heat loss is the main concern with this traditional type of water heater, some manufacturers have made sure to release energy-efficient versions which feature extra insulation.

Tankless water heaters
The advantage of this type is that it only heats water by demand, resulting in minimal energy consumption. With no tank requirement, this option is ideal for households in small spaces. As water is heated only when needed unlike in storage tank water heaters, where water is constantly heated, a tankless water heater takes longer to produce hot water.

Heat pump water heaters

This type uses electricity to transfer heat from the air instead of the usual process of converting electricity directly to heat. A heat pump can also take on the role as the home’s space heating equipment.
