Drain Cleaning Techniques for the Beginner

Clogged drains happen unexpectedly. You’re using the sink and the water won’t drain or the bathwater drips out slowly. You don’t have to call the plumber just yet. There are several drain cleaning techniques that anyone can do.
Using Drain Cleaners
The most common recommendation is to use a liquid drain cleaner. You need not have to go out and buy one. You can make one yourself by pouring a mix of baking soda and vinegar or hot water. However, for more persistent clogs, there are several excellent commercial products that are worth a try. A few things to keep in mind when choosing a drain cleaner:

  • Choose an environmentally safe brand because what you pour down the drain could be harmful to the pipes; worse, it could seep into ground water.
  • For toilet drains, choose products that use enzymes that could kill bacteria and clear up organic matter along the drain walls.
  • Read the safety precautions of every product you use, and diligently follow the instructions.

Using Drain Cleaning Items
Some clogs don’t need chemical solutions because they are resistant to it. A broken wire hanger can be all you need to push the clog out of the way. However, more professional products would be able to produce results. Drain snakes and drain claws are available at hardware stores for this purpose.
