Cleaning Drains without Polluting the Environment

It’s important to keep the drains in your house clean, unclogged, and free from bacteria that cause odor. While you undoubtedly have a wide array of options when it comes to cleaners, many of these drain cleaners aren’t helpful to the environment. Here are some environmentally friendly alternatives you can try before calling your plumber for help:

Hot Water
When it comes to removing or preventing clogs, a simple bath of hot or boiling water should be enough. Heat up a gallon of water and pour it down into the drain with a few minutes interval until it’s emptied. Keep doing this at least once a week to prevent hair, grease, and food products from caking up in the drain.

Vinegar and Baking Soda
If you already notice a decrease in the rate water is draining in the sink, pour half a cup of baking soda into the drain. Then, follow it up with the same amount of white vinegar. This should unclog sinks more efficiently. Don’t try this solution if you’re planning on using a chemical cleaner right afterwards, though.

Commercial Products

You don’t have to completely shun the notion of buying cleaners from the supermarket to keep your drain-cleaning eco-friendly. If you must buy a commercially produced product to get rid of the clogs and smells, look for chemicals that are natural bacterial and enzyme mixtures, instead of the abrasive or potentially dangerous chemicals.
