DIY plumbing has its
perks – but only if it is done right. Sad to say, there are eager
but untrained homeowners who are willing to take the risk and do the
plumbing on their own. The result? Messy and troublesome mistakes
that would have been avoided. Here are some of them.
The “Good enough”
mentality. Or should we say, “Disease”? Delicate projects
like plumbing won’t take “good enough” for an assurance. All
those pipes and fittings account for your home’s cleanliness and
orderliness, and even your family’s safety.
Using mismatching
material. It doesn’t necessarily mean that one cannot use two
different types of pipe. One just have to make sure that they’re
using the proper fitting – for instance, the correct coupling to
properly connect a steel and copper pipe. Using the wrong fitting or
none at all can cause the metals to quickly corrode at the
connection, and can even build up to clog the pipe.
Forgetting the
Teflon tape. Teflon tape is an indispensable plumbing material
used on the threaded ends of pipes. Using it lubricates the ends for
easier fitting, and also makes the joint more watertight. A
watertight joint is virtually leak-proof – which is music to the
ears of everyone in the plumbing industry.
Not using the level.
Not doing so increases the chance of laying down uneven pipes,
which can cause a wide array of future problems. Like the Teflon
tape, this is a fairly simple step that is often overlooked.
